The Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI) is proud to announce a new partnership with Tallman Eye Associates to offer much-needed services to those with low vision in the Merrimack Valley. These services are now being offered at Tallman Eye’s Lawrence location at 360 Merrimack Street and are available to both English and Spanish speakers.

Services include low vision examinations, in which an eye doctor conducts a specialized exam to help an individual learn to use his or her remaining vision in their daily life, with the goal being to help them live as independently as possible. In addition, occupational therapists are available to perform in-home vision rehabilitation, in which they help individuals learn adaptive strategies for coping with vision loss and remaining confident in their home environments.

Chrys Peralta, a Lawrence resident and MABVI Occupational Therapist working directly with patients at Tallman Eye Associates, shared, “The partnership between Tallman Eye optometrists and MABVI occupational therapists in Lawrence is a great opportunity for this community to take advantage of their combined expertise. I look forward to giving back to my community in this meaningful and helpful way.”

“We feel it’s important that everyone coping with vision loss receive the services they need,” adds Shaun Kinsella, Statewide Director of MABVI, “and partnering with an established provider in the Merrimack Valley region like Tallman Eye Associates will help us in that mission.”

Tallman Eye Associates was founded in Lawrence in 1967 by Carter B. Tallman. The practice has pioneered modern eye surgery in the Merrimack Valley, which includes being one of the first practices in New England to offer LASIK procedures. Over the years, they have grown into one of largest eye practices in the area, with nineteen ophthalmologists and optometrists offering medical services in all aspects of eye care for patients of all ages.

Founded as the Massachusetts Association for the Blind in 1903 by Hellen Keller and friends, MABVI is the oldest social service organization in the country that serves adults and elders who are blind or visually impaired. Today MABVI is focused on ensuring that everyone with vision loss, especially the rapidly expanding older population, receive the services they need to live a full life in their communities.
