How does vision loss affect fall risk and what can vision rehab do to help?

There is substantial literature documenting the impact that vision loss has on increased fall risk. Please download Vision Changes and Risk of Falls (pdf) for more extensive information.

Why Vision Rehabilitation for Your Patient

Vision loss may not be the primary medical issue that your patient is facing. But if he cannot read the labels on prescriptions, or see the glucose meter, or navigate his apartment safely, he will be less likely to be able to comply with your recommended care plan. Vision loss results in patients having significantly higher risks of depression, falls, and costly hospitalizations. Vision rehabilitation cannot restore vision. But it can help learn adaptive strategies for healthcare management and in-home safety.

How does vision rehabilitation support patients with diabetes?

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss and blindness among U.S. adults. Our occupational therapists provide specific training around adaptive strategies for monitoring blood glucose, foot care, insulin management, and meal planning. This training supplements the care that a patient receives from a diabetes self-management program or provider, making the care plan accessible and attainable for someone with low vision.

Do we report back to you?

After the low vision exam the referring doctor receives a report from our providers. If the patient is referred for Occupational Therapy, the referring doctor must approve the OT Plan of Care before we begin treatment. When the OT discharges the patient, the referring doctor will receive the OT Discharge Summary. If the referring doctor is a low vision doctor, we will also include all the progress notes.
